When was fleece invented? Well, honestly fleece is the natural coating found on sheep so you could say that fleece was invented around the time that sheep came along. Perhaps a better question would be when fleece was officially used in our society. However, such a question is still rather daunting since the earliest records of fleece being used for clothing date back to as early as 6000 BC. That’s quite a long time, years before our time and all the things we take for granted – law enforcement, cars, indoor plumbing, credit cards, debt counseling, etc.

What we do know is that fleece has been used for a majority of clothing and materials including textiles and coats for as long as man has been around. In medieval times, wool was used for trade and was considered to be much more valuable than gold, although a lot of gold could certainly buy you a lot of wool and would indubitably make you a much richer man – especially during the colder English months. And while we may never know the exact history of fleece, like when it first officially began to be used or recognized as a valid clothing option, we can rest assured knowing that without it some of our earliest ancestors would not have made it.

On cold winter days many people snuggle up in a fleece blanket, or they wear a fleece sweater. Fleece is a beloved fabric because of its’ silky warm texture. Have you every given thought of how fleece is made? It takes about twentyfive recycled plastic bottles to make one piece of fleece clothing. That’s right. Fleece is made from plastic.

The process consists of dividing the bottles by color, sterilizing them, and then liquefying them. This results in a syrupy substance. Then the liquid is pushed through metal discs containing holes. This is called a spinneret. When the liquid and air combine it hardens, and then you have the thread like substance that will be used in the production of fleece.

Then the threads are wound around large spools, and a process is begun that allows for the coloring, cleaning, and durability of the fleece. However it is the pulling of the threads that give it the soft texture. It is pulled using a machine that has several brushes. These brushes move at different speeds, and they literally comb the fabric. It is also called napping because the brushes pull the naps out of the fabric. The end result is a fabric that is not only soft, but has the durability and strength to keep a person warm in the most extreme weather conditions.

Natural fleece and synthetic fleece are both popular fabrics. There are pros and cons to both. While natural fleece comes from sheep wool, it is a renewable resource. Polar fleece is a synthetic fabric made from Polyethylene terephthalate, also called PET fibers. This synthetic fleece is commonly called polyester or polar fleece. This is an animal free product acceptable to vegans. Since PET is used in plastic bottles, polar fleece can also be made from recycled bottles reducing the need for natural resources including petroleum.

Sheep wool has been around since early civilization. Natural fleece easily soaks up moisture. It can soak up one third of its weight before it feels damp and uncomfortable. Because of its properties, it works well in winter hats, coats and also boot linings. Polar fleece was invented in the 1980s and has revolutionized outdoor clothing. Synthetic fleece will absorb less than one percent of its weight in moisture even when it is fully soaked. It retains its lightweight and breathability properties when it is wet. Synthetic fleece is most commonly used in active outerwear.

A natural property of wool fleece is that it is flame resistant. It will self extinguish. Wool blankets have even been used to extinguish small fires. Synthetic polar fleece burns easily unless it is treated with a flame retardant material. It also burns easliy when it is ironed. Polar fleece is also less wind resistant than natural fleece. It is made denser or has an added layer to provide wind breaking properties.
